“Leaving”

North shore of Geneva Lake in Wisconsin

December 5, 2024

Meditation can be many types, not just the most prevalent notion of sitting motionless with eyes closed as one goes deeply into a different realm, whatever it may be.

Walking puts me in a meditative groove, and one of the best places to do so is the path around Geneva Lake in Wisconsin.

I made this photograph when I ventured out on the path on the north shore of the lake on November 1, 2002. The approximate location is by the former Jerseyhurst estate east of the Knollwood subdivision.

This is one of my favorite photos. One reason is the sweep of the land as it rolls down the hill and off into the distance, with perspective offered by piers and buildings.

Another reason is the trees. Of course! Those impressive oaks are the shoreline sentinels in all their grandeur.

The final reason is the person, a woman with whom I crossed paths a few moments before I captured this scene. She provided the perfect element to expand the significance of this photo.

Wouldn't you want to be her enjoying the solitude of a walking meditation on a crisp and sunny day on the shore path? Is it calling to you?
