“One Direction”

Along the Geneva Lake shore path in Fontana, Wisconsin

September 19, 2024

“One Direction” – You probably had little difficulty figuring out why I titled this photograph as I did, since the strong vertical lines, the curved lines of the hull, and the thin trim piece on the bow all point down.

The vertical lines are interrupted by the angled polished stainless-steel trim pieces and the horizontal waterline (I hope that is the correct term.). And, if you look closely, the spaces between the boards of the pier are reflected as lines in the hull.

All the lines are in contrast, of course, to the constantly churning water of Geneva Lake in Fontana, Wisconsin, when I clicked the shutter on June 28, 2006. I did not note the specific location. Maybe someone recognizes the boat and the canopy fabric pattern.

What else is obvious about this image is its symmetry. Usually symmetry makes for boring photographs, but in this instance the striking difference between the boat and the canopy side curtain hopefully deflect any viewer accusations of mediocrity toward the photographer. And, the even divisions produce triangles in the bow: How many do you see?

The boat serves as a reminder to encourage you to attend the annual Geneva Lakes Boat Show on Saturday and Sunday, September 28-29 at the harbor and marina of The Abbey Resort in Fontana. Boats will be displayed at 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday and at 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday. One of the highlights is a boat parade at 4 o’clock Saturday.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free event, which is presented by the Blackhawk Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. You will be able to see incredible classic, vintage, and newer boats from throughout the United States, with many of them worth into six figures. For more information about the event, go to https://www.genevalakesboatshow.com/.

If you never have been to the show and may not even be all that interested boats, I urge you to check out the event. The detailing and craftsmanship of the crafts are simply astounding, reflective of the owners’ dedication and passion for making the boats simply the best they can be.

Walworth County residents planning to display their Chris-Craft, Streblow, Shepherd, Lyman, Hacker-Craft, and other makes of boats are: Lars Bergersen, Alan Bosworth, Tom Nickols, Andrew Kubicsko, Wendy Fisher, Scott Leitner of Lake Geneva; Danny Lyons and Patrick Maher of Delavan; Jim McAvoy and Mike Ardito of Walworth; Doug Tracy and Roberta Hegy of East Troy; Tom Whowell, Edward Cox, and Mark Licht of Fontana; and Jerry Slovick of Williams Bay.
